Every fall, the local ACI Chapter awards a number of scholarships to Masters and Doctoral students during its annual seminar “Progress in the field of concrete.” The goal of these scholarships is to advance applied research in the field of concrete in order to promote its use and improve its performance.

 
 

 

 

Eligibility requirements:

1) The program is open to graduate students enrolled in a university located within the limits of the local ACI Chapter;

2) Students must have begun one semester of study within their graduate program;

3) The program is open to Canadian citizens or landed immigrants, or candidates who have filled out a request toward becoming an immigrant in Canada;

4) Students must be involved in a research project in the field of concrete.

Evaluation criteria for the scholarships:

  • Relevance of the topic with regards to the needs of the concrete industry in terms of production, design, sustainable development, construction, repair, non-destructive testing and evaluation, etc. (30 points);
  • Clear presentation of the technological or scientific objectives of the proposed research project. Justification of these objectives as they relate to work conducted in the same research field (30 points);
  • Quality, originality and scope of the project. Schedule and work plan (20 points);
  • Quality and compliance of the scholarship request form (adherence to page number limit, texts, format of the request, tables, figures, relevance and quality of bibliographic references, etc.) (10 points);
  • Demonstration of the candidate’s personal interest for his or her research project and future career plan (10 points).

Note 1: Application files must not exceed 5 pages maximum, including photos, graphs and appendices. They must also be authorized and signed by a sponsoring professor.

Note 2: All students who have submitted a completed application file will enjoy free registration to the ACI Local Chapter’s 2009 “Progress in the field of concrete” seminar.

Number of scholarships and value:

For 2009, 3 scholarships will be awarded to Masters’ and Doctoral students, valued at over $ 10,000. The breakdown of scholarships is as follows:

  • 1 scholarship valued at $ 4000 for Doctoral students.
  • 2 scholarships valued at $ 3000 each for Masters’ level students.
  • 1 scholarship funded by the sponsors, valued at $ 2500 for students at both the Masters’ and Doctoral level.
